Polar Bear 5k Race Report

It was cold, breezy and damp this morning. The boys were psyched non the less.

Xan man was up first for a 2K.

Xavier wanted to run the 2k after he saw the other people getting ready. We did the aerobic warm up, which was really funny to watch the boys do.

I ran and met Xan half way. He was just walking and talking to another family! We ran and walked in, stopping to pose for Dad and the other photographer.

Xan was whooped. He was very proud of himself, which is the most important thing. I think he broke 19 minutes. He said on the way home "I wish I placed higher". I'm glad he's motivated for the next race!

Xavier's race was inside, one lap around the track inside the church. He started in the back and was much more concerned with the Polar Bear mascot than anything else. We should have put him in the 2k, he could have done it easily! Next year I think I'll run the whole 2k with both boys. :)

I'm so proud of my boys and they're proud of themselves. That's what makes it wonderful.

The 5k start was a cluster! I didn't cross the start line for at least 65 seconds after the gun. First mile was 8:25 by my watch and 9:30 by the official timer. The course was different and there was a steady hill right after mile 1 that taxed me a little. I'm a baby when it comes to hills anyway! I wanted to throw up about 15 minutes in, but the beauty of the 5k is that is the point you're half way done! I waddled along, crossed over lower roswell road and picked it up bit by bit. I think mile 2 was 9 minutes. I was in some pain at that point. Anyway---I tried to increase slowly up the last little hill, then turn to finish. I picked off quite a few at the end, and my body ached! Official time was 27:48 however I'm calling it 26:45 according to my watch; 8:38 pace. Not bad considering I haven't trained as consistently as I had been due to the crummy weather. SOoooOOOooo yay! I wanted to break 27. My goal for the 10K next month is to break an hour. I've gotta stay on top of my long runs!

I enjoyed a bagel, a cookie and a non-fat vanilla cappuccino from Quik Trip after the race. I love those things- I'm sure they're 100% sugar but I earned it!
Looking forward to a hot shower, comfy clothes and my crochet projects for the rest of the day.
